Configuring Dial-Up Networking to connect to Microgear.net

This is a step-by-step walkthrough on how to set up a Dial-Up Networking connection to Microgear.net. If you do not have Dial-Up Networking on your Windows 95/98 machine, please first visit Adding Dial-Up Networking and then come back and follow the steps listed here.


Double-click on the My Computer icon at the top left corner of your screen. Double-click on Dial-Up Networking.My Computer Window
This is where Windows 95 stores the information it needs to connect to online services. Double-click on the "Make New Connection" icon. This will bring up the first dialog box of making your connection to Microgear.net.Dial-Up Networking
Type Microgear.net in the box under "Type a name...". Make sure your modem is listed in the "Select a modem" box. When this is done, click on "Next"Make New Connection dialog
Enter the area code and dialup number, (318)213-2490, as shown in the screenshot to the right. Make sure the country is set to "United States of America" as shown. Click "Next".
You have completed the first part of setting up your connection. Click on "Finish" and then go back to your Dial-Up Networking window.
Right-click on the Microgear.net icon in your Dial-Up Networking folder. Select "Properties" from the context menu. The connection dialog will appear; click the "Server Types" tab to set up your connection.
Here are the general options that define how your computer connects to Microgear.net. Select the "PPP:Windows 95..." option from the pull-down menu, and ensure that "Enable software compression" is the only Advanced option selected. Then select only the "TCP/IP" option under allowed protocols. It should look just like the screen to the right. When this is done, click on "TCP/IP Settings".
Microgear.net's servers will automatically assign your computer an IP address and tell it which name servers to use each time you dial in. So select "Server assigned IP address" and "Server assigned name server addresses". Also, make sure that "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" are both checked. Click on "OK" and then click "OK" on the Properties window.
Your connection is now set up. Double-click on the "Microgear.net" icon in Dial-Up Networking and you will see the "Connect To" dialog. Enter your login name and password, and click on "Save password". If you need to dial a number to get an outside line or disable call waiting, you can click on the "Dial Properties" button and add those numbers. You are now ready to go online with Microgear.net. Click "Connect" and your computer will connect to Microgear.net.
