Adding Dial-Up Networking to Windows 95
This is a step-by-step walkthrough on how to add Dial-Up Networking to Windows 95. After you have
successfully added Dial-Up Networking, follow the instructions on setting up your connection
to Microgear.net.
Bring up the Start menu, and select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon and then select the "Windows Setup" tab.
This is where you can add and remove any component from your Windows 95 setup. Dial-Up Networking is part of communications, so click on Communications. When Communications is highlighted, click on Details.
Dial-Up Networking is the first option in this window. Make sure that it is selected. Microsoft NetMeeting can allow you to communicate with others in realtime online, so select it if you wish. All the other options in Communications do not influence your connection to Microgear.net, so it does not matter if you install them or not. Click OK, then OK again to install Dial-Up Networking.
After Dial-Up Networking has been installed, close the Add/Remove Programs control panel and open the Network control panel. To connect to Microgear.net you need the Client for Microsoft Networks, the Dial-Up Adapter, and the TCP/IP protocol.
To add the Client for Microsoft Networks, click on Add, then select Client. Select Microsoft in the left pane and Client for Microsoft Networks in the right. Click on OK to add the Client for Microsoft Networks.
Next, add the Dial-Up Adapter. Click on Add again, then select Adapter, then select Microsoft and Dial-Up Adapter. Click OK to install the Dial-Up Adapter.
Finally, you need the TCP/IP protocol to communicate with Microgear.net. Click on Add, then select Protocol. Select Microsoft, and TCP/IP. Click OK to install the TCP/IP protocol.
The last thing your computer needs is an identity on the network. Click the Identification tab, and next to Computer name, enter a name for your computer. It can be whatever you like (your login name is a good idea). Click on OK and you are set up and ready to configure Dial-Up Networking to connect to Microgear.net.
